While he was born in Vancouver, Peter’s family resides on Gilford Island, BC. He started drawing at the age of seven and began learning to carve in wood in 1995. He studied with Winadzi (Simon) James for four years, also studying under Jack James, Jim King, and Sam Johnson. Peter holds the traditional name Giq-Kalas, which is translated as ‘Son of Great Importance'. His work was included in the landmark mask exhibition ‘Down From the Shimmering Skies’ at the Vancouver Art Gallery in 1998. This show travelled to LA and Portland as well.
