James Sawyer works with bentwood boxes, panels, drums, paddles, prints, blankets, and gold and silver jewellery. His lineage includes Haida carvers Doug Wilson, his uncle, and Ike Hans, his grandfather. James started carving in 1996. He has apprenticed with Haida artist Pat Wesley, and cites renowned Haida artist Reg Davidson as an influence. James often creates unique and innovative pieces that incorporate popular culture. For example, he fully engraved a Zippo lighter for us here at Lattimer Gallery, and also carved Haida designs within sterling silver Iron Cross-shaped pendants.
