Growing up in Alert Bay, Gary was first exposed to Northwest Coast art forms walking by the carving shed where artists such as Doug Cranmer, Beau Dick and Wayne Alfred were working on carved cedar artworks. In the early 1990’s Gary took carving courses with Wayne Alfred and Beau Dick. Gary has worked on totem pole commissions with Lyle Campbell and Luke Marston.
