Fred Moyer is mostly self-taught, but the instruction that he did receive came from fellow artists Reg Wesley, Delbert Bell, and Terrence Campbell. He has also worked with Tahltan artist, Vern Etzerza. While Fred began carving in 1989, it was not until 1992 that he started creating gold and silver jewellery. In his work, Fred is strongly influenced by his grandmother, who lived in Dease Lake. Fred lives is Dease Lake to this day.
