3/4" x 2 1/2" dia. Argillite is a fine black slate which occurs only at a quarry on a Slatechuck Mountain, near the town of Skidegate in Haida Gwaai. It is carved exclusively by peoples from the Haida nation.
The Seabear is a supernatural being of the undersea world with the head of a bear and a body containing marine features such as fins and a whale tail. This creature is a skilled whaler and is responsible for holding up the world in many native myths. Artist Biography and Additional Work
