Joseph Calder began to carve wood in the early 1970s, and he received training from Hank Robinson and  Nisga'a/Tsimshian artist Murphy Stanley. He started to work in silver shortly after he established himself as a wood carver, and he has been working in both media for more than 25 years. He works in a traditional Nisga'a style.
