John began learning carving at a young age from his grandfather Chief Simon Baker (Khot-La-Cha) and from Richard Baker, another accomplished carver. He works with red cedar, yellow cedar, abalone, copper, mixed media, and cedar bark. He carves plaques, masks, and other sculpture. John lives in North Vancouver and works full time as an artist
