Ed McDougall
CULTURAL GROUP:
Kwakwaka'wakw
BIRTHPLACE:
Alert Bay, BC
Ed McDougall comes from a long line of cultural leaders and artists based in Alert Bay, including grandfather, Chief John Scow, and grandfather, Chief Sam Scow. Ed's Kwakwaka'wakw name is Tlakwa'gila, which translates to "Copper Maker." This name is reflected in Ed's artwork as many of his pieces are created from copper. Ocean motifs are common in his work as well since he has held a life-long connection with the sea. He first gained experience harvesting seaweed, fishing, and digging for clams, and later, working on commercial fishing boats. Finally, he has been guiding whale watching tours and continuing to fish. Ed takes great pleasure in teaching younger artists about Kwakwaka'wakw art and culture.
