Aayaay comes from the Skidegate Gidins (Eagles of Skidegate) clan from Haida Gwaii. In 2005, Aayaay learned how to weave cedar bark with his grandmother. In 2008, he learned Ravens Tail weaving from established artist and weaver, Evelyn Vanderhoop. With guidance from his mentor, Evelyn, he learned Naaxiin (Chilkat weaving) in 2013 and completed an advanced Naaxiin course in 2014. In 2017, he started learning how to engrave silver and copper, and learned casting and jewelry techniques with sisters, Val and Wendy Malesku.
